    Story

Brumas del Zurquí is a family-owned micro mill located near San Isidro in Heredia, within Costa Rica’s Central Valley. It is operated by Juan Ramón Alvarado Rodríguez and his family.

With a background in agricultural science, Juan Ramón has built on four generations of coffee-growing experience, focusing on variety selection, processing, and continuous improvements in quality control. Since the early 2000s, the family has developed Brumas del Zurquí into a micro mill, incorporating a cupping laboratory and roastery to further explore and express the unique character of their coffees.

They work with a diverse range of varieties, including Java, Gesha, and SL28, carefully developing each one to bring out its individual qualities. This Java Natural is a lot that brings together the family’s long history, agricultural expertise, and continued pursuit of quality at Brumas del Zurquí.

A Note from the Online Shop Manager

From the moment I ground the beans, a sweet, floral aroma filled the air. It immediately made me think, “This is going to be delicious!” And it really is.

The moment you take a sip, sweet-tart fruitiness and gentle sweetness spread across the palate.

Brumas grows a variety of coffee cultivars with roots in different parts of the world, and this Java is a variety with origins in Indonesia.

Brumas coffees always have a remarkably clean and transparent character. You can almost sense the care and attention that goes into every step of the process with each sip.

Brumas del Zurquí is a brand operated by Juan Ramón Alvarado Rodríguez.

The Rodríguez Carballo family has been cultivating coffee since around 1880, making them one of Costa Rica’s traditional coffee producers.
Known for their exceptional quality, they won 1st place at the 2012 Cup of Excellence (COE) and have a long history of awards.

From cultivation to processing, they maintain strict quality control, continuously innovate,
and implement sustainable, environmentally conscious production systems to ensure high-quality coffee.

Originally, Juan Ramón owned a farm in Costa Rica’s Central Valley,
but to pursue even higher-quality coffee, he established a new micro-mill in the Tarrazú region,

an area known for its cool climate and frequent mist — a rare and favorable environment in Costa Rica.

During our visit to the farm, we were deeply impressed by Juan Ramón’s passion and new initiatives in Tarrazú.
His coffee is outstanding, and this is a farm we absolutely wanted to source from.

We are delighted to share this exceptional coffee with you.
